Vintage Premier League 94 Sticker Album

How much did it REALLY cost to complete a Merlin sticker album – and what would it cost today?

The original Merlin Premier League album cost just 50p, with packets of six stickers selling for 22p. But completing the 479-sticker collection was another matter entirely.

As a football-obsessed child in the 1990s, there were few greater pleasures than taking my pocket money to the local newsagent and coming back with a packet of stickers for that grail of grails, the Merlin 1994 Premier League sticker album.

Fast forward 32 years and my own son is a huge Pokémon fan. He gets that same feeling I had for those Merlin stickers whenever he opens a new packet of Pokémon cards. There is one big difference, though. To get our hands on the latest Pokémon cards, we've had to queue for hours on release day before handing over £7 for a single pack.

Back in my day, a packet of Premier League stickers cost just 22p. Each contained six stickers, while the beautiful album into which we stuck them cost 50p. That album itself was a work of art. Beautifully coloured, packed with statistics and extra sections featuring matchday programme covers and rising stars, it was wonderful.
